North Circular Water Main, Newcastle upon Tyne

Clients: MWH / Northumbrian Water plc

This was a major water main project around the northern edge of Newcastle upon Tyne. Argus Ecology surveyed the route, and advised on ecological constraints, which in some cases involved sites we already had detailed knowledge of from past projects.

Key issues identified included great crested newt breeding ponds in close proximity, and potential losses of hedgerows and trees. We formulated a mitigation programme in consultation with the client to minimise impacts, and obtained a great crested newt licence from Natural England to cover possible impacts on the ponds. Argus staff were on hand throughout the construction period to ensure the terms of the licence were fulfilled and the needs of protected species were met, and ensuring the construction programme could proceed without interruption.
