Housing and Industry

Whether brownfield or greenfield, ecological issues are frequently a significant factor in the development of land for industrial estates, offices and housing. In recent years, the need to consider ecological issues when developing land has been formalised with the Code for Sustainable Homes. This became a mandatory requirement in May 2008 for new development, although ecology remains a ‘flexible’ rather than mandatory component. Other assessment tools, including BREEAM Industry and BREEAM Office also include a land-use and ecological component.

Argus Ecology has worked closely with Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM assessors to calculate factors such as ecological value of site and ecological enhancement. As well as these sustainability standards, housing and industrial developments also need to consider their ecological impacts in order to comply with planning, environmental impact assessment and protected species legislation.
